Jessie and her Horses and Dogs

Jessie riding Redskin, La Lune right, 1994

Jessie's love of dogs and horses goes right back to her childhood at the Jack family farm, Brakfontein, where both dogs and horses, as well as mules and donkeys, were still a vital part of the working farm in those pre-tractor days.

Until recently she has always had a dog, or several. But she had many horse-less years after she left her parents' farm and moved to Cape Town. Of course she was pretty busy in the city, first with office work and then, after marrying Hans, even busier raising a young family.

Then, maybe spurred on by a horse-mad young daughter, she bought a sturdy chestnut gelding, Euclid, in 1960?? and has not been without one or more horses since then. Gazelle the wild and beautiful one, Mercury the strange fellow, hard working little Sargeant, steady reliable Copper, Redskin the faithful who travelled far and wide, and Redskin's unexpected daughter La Lune have all been great companions and participants in many adventures, including Jessie's long journeys on horseback to Grabouw, Darling, Saldanha Bay,Beaufort West, Caledon and Hermanus, and more.

We're hoping to persuade Jessie to tell some of her dog and horse stories in her own words, and in the meantime we've included some dog and horse pictures to jog her memory!
