Hans - a quick resume

Another extract from Hans' email:

... I have been pestered several times by the Chamber of Commerce to give them a resume of my life, "not only in the Chamber of Commerce".

So I have cobbled what follows, together. You may use it for the website, pending a narrative that is in the planning stage.

HANS MIDDELMANN - 1912 to 1998

    1912           Born in Berlin, Germany                
    1922           Moved to Leipzig, matric in 1931        
        
    1931           Work in London, occasional student at London     
                   School of Economics                
    1932 to 1936   Merchant Bank traineeship in Leipzig.  Travels
                   in Europe.                        
                            
    1933           Hitler gains power in Germany.            
    1937           Emigrate to Cape Town, South Africa. Start
                   work at Inter-Union Finance Ltd, later Inter-Union's 
                   Secretary, Manager, Managing Director.        
        
    1939 to 1945,  World War II                    
    1941           Join Cape Town Junior Chamber of Commerce.
            
    1946           Elected President Cape Town Junior Chamber of 
                   Commerce                
    1947           Naturalised South African citizen.  Marriage to 
                   Jessie Jack                
                            
    1948           Commercial Opinion" publishes my first  public 
                   writing.  Since then many contributions to 
                   various South African newspapers and magazines, 
                   mainly on economic and political themes, 
                   propagating the Open Society and Market 
                   economics.                
    
    1948 to 1958   Our four children born                
    1955           Appointed statutory member Statistics Council    
            
    1956           First of many travels to Europe            
    1959           Elected President Cape Town Chamber of Commerce

    1963           First of many travels to Australia and the East.

                   Mutual Life Assurance, Chairman from 1974 to     
                   1984.  Chairman City Club.

    1969           Board member Standard Bank Investment Corporation

    1969 to 1980   All four children graduate UCT BSc, Mish also BA.    
    1970           First of many travels to USA            
    
    1972           After 35 years, retire from Inter-Union Finance 
                   Ltd and its Board.  Board member Tongaat (later 
                   Tongaat-Hulett Group) (retire 1983)        
        
    1973           Elected member of Council of University of Cape 
                   Town (UCT) (retire 1990)            
    
    1975           Member of Baxter Theatre Board, Chairman  1984 to 
                   1990.                
    1976           Governor, Trustee UCT Foundation, Life Governor 
                   since 1987.                
                            
    1988           Awarded honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by UCT.    
    1993           Board member of Open Society Foundation of S A.
