Mbizo Camp at Itala

May 1998

I'm standing on a rock in the Mbizo river to take this picture. It gives you an idea of the cottages - built on stilts, thatched, big shady verandahs, all natural wood construction, stunning views.
Inside, none of the walls reach the high thatched roof. Bedrooms can be completely private but have the kind of view to die for - this is the view from the bed I slept in (Yes! This is the first South African national park I have EVER found that actually provides double beds!)

Between the two bedrooms there is the self-catering kitchen, bar-style counters, and relaxed verandah - all open to the views and the warm weather, under the beautiful thatch. And (near enough to be easy, far enough to be a hassle on a chilly night) just next door is the bathroom with hot open-air showers, beyond that the loo with a view. Both arranged with strategically designed reed walls to give you all the privacy you need, yet preserve the view. And in the case of the showers, the stars over your head.

The river is said to be free from bilharzia, and it was warm enough to swim in in late May. Lots of lovely warm, jet-black rocks to lie around on too. And even animals browsing on the far bank while you swim!
