Midmar: the Golden Mile

11 April 1999

Temba (8) became the youngest in our family, and maybe the youngest Middelmann or Dawson ever, to swim a mile nonstop race today. Swimming with Colleen, Mish and Shingi, the whole family had a fun swim - led by Shingi who finished in 41 minutes - beating last year's time by about 5 minutes. It was a fun race, topping off a fun weekend with lots of sailing, windsurfing, tennis, running, capsizing and all. Here are a couple of pictures from the swim:

First step was to get up early and rig the catamaran we'd rented for the weekend, then sail over to the swimming area, a few miles upwind - in an almost dead calm, of course! The weather, as you can see, was quite cloudy but although we had rain the day before, nothing more than the cloud blew over during the race.

Here we are, lined up with our race numbers on our arms and our swimsuits, ready for the big swim. Orange caps for over 40, blue for 11 and under.before.jpg (25188 bytes)

Were we proud of finishing or what?!
